SoulBrotha aka SB

From the moment you hear the strains of his music, you immediately know that you’re not listening to an ordinary artist. For SoulBrotha, also known as SB, all the little details that differentiate between the ordinary and spectacular are present as he connects with music lovers.

On November 25, 2011, SB will release his Southpaw EP, a collection of songs that are as much personal to the young lyricist as they are artistic. The first single from the project “Way of Love (Never Out of Season)” was released in November, and will have an accompanying video prior to the EP’s official release.

SB explains that crafting Southpaw was an intense process, driven by true passion for reaching the masses through musical expression.

“Due to the situations and challenges I was facing at the time of writing the songs for Southpaw, I consider it a very special project dear to my heart,” explains SB. This is my most personal and intimate record yet, and really shows my growth as a songwriter. All the songs were written performed by me, so this has given me a unique opportunity to showcase different strengths and talents I knew I had all along.”

SoulBrotha brings his charismatic, undeniably versatility to each song he writes, spinning tales of passionate romance on one track, speaking on the hazards of superficiality on another. SB is a firebrand MC in conceptual command of his aesthetic. He blends brutal honesty with spirituality and action, while calling attention to social issues with the ferocity of a cultural revolutionary and the precision of a surgeon.

SB first showcased this multi-dimensional sound on his widely-praised debut album Ezekiel Hanani LP. He continued this tradition on 2008’s Exodus mixtape, which ended up on many critics’ year-end lists.

He kicked off 2009 with the first ever concept song about the micro-blogging behemoth, Twitter. Within hours of its release, “The Twitter Song” had the Internet ablaze, cementing SB’s ability to inspire audiences all across the board.

Despite his online buzz and regional success in the U.S., specifically his current home of Houston, Texas, SB is not resting on his laurels and has his sights on breaking ground in Nigeria, his first love. Unapologetic about his Christian faith, SoulBrotha’s sound reflects exposure to a wide array of influences, thanks in part to his unique heritage; born to Delta State parents, raised in PortHarcourt, inundated with a vast array of eclectic influences.

“I think being Nigerian affords me the ability to expand in the most creative fashion,” he asserts. “I was raised on so many genres of music, and my background offers a unique perspective on the world and socio-political events. The music scene in Texas has always been rooted in a DIY mentality. We don’t wait for things to be handed to us, we just go and do what needs to be done. I’ve been blessed to be surrounded with a great team of people who share my vision, and are passionate about the kind of music I’m making.”

Southpaw marks a new era of sound for SB, and he acknowledges that he’d like fans to relate to both the lyrics and melodies throughout the project. He feels that the artistic connection with producers on the EP definitely contribute to that sensibility.

“Both producers Joe Andriulli and BroadNMarket are close acquaintances of mine,” SB explains. “I’ve known BNM for several years, and this was our first project together. We’ve found a ‘lane’ of sorts where we can both express ourselves creatively, same for Joe as well. As for the messages in the lyrics, for those familiar with my previous work, it’s still the same motivational lyrics that are faith-based, and are intended to inspire and evoke a winner-mentality in everyone.”

From heartfelt anthems to soul-shaking rhythms, this renowned MC is sure to leave an indelible impression on music-lovers.

“I want people to understand that I’m just a man who isn’t perfect, but is striving to be the best person he can be for his family, friends, and for the world at large,” says SB. “I am here for a reason – we all are – and until one’s purpose for existence is fulfilled or achieved, one can never truly enjoy the best life has to offer. I will keep on making music that is cutting edge and timeless. I hope to inspire and motivate our generation, and hopefully future generations to come.”
