Project Pat

Of the many hardcore rappers to emerge from Memphis during the late ’90s, Project Pat stood tall amid his peers. His affiliation with the Three 6 Mafia collective introduced him to many listeners, especially after he was featured on the group’s hit song “Sippin’ on Some Syrup” in 2000.  In 2011, Pat released the Loud Pack project, which featured Rick Ross, Brisco and Three 6 Mafia, followed by his mixtape Belly On Full in 2012, and there was no doubt in his fans’ minds that the veteran rapper was staying in tune with the times.

On October 2, 2012, Project Pat will release Belly On Full Part 2 in conjunction with Select-O-Hits. The lead single “P.O.L.O (Horse Power)” features Juicy J, and is a DJ and mixtape favorite. Described as an all-around street album with something for everyone, the title refers to getting money and trying to stay up.

With more features from returning BOF Part 1 cohort Nasty Mane, Atlanta’s Gorilla Zoe and Miami newcomer Spaceghostpurrp, Belly On Full 2 aims to capture Pat’s devoted fan base along with recognizing the growing “Trippy” movement.

Rap music had long been a part of Pat’s life before he soared to national fame. His brother, Juicy J, co-founded Three 6 Mafia during the early ’90s, and though Pat was never an official member of the group, he affiliated himself with appearances on such albums as Crazyndalazdayz (1998) and Indo G’s Angel Dust (1998).

A year later, Pat recorded a solo album of his own for Hypnotize Minds/Loud entitled Ghetty Green. Though the project didn’t propel Pat to superstar status, it did establish him within the growing Dirty South scene, and his independently released follow-up album, Murderers & Robbers in 2000, did much the same.

Next came Pat’s high-profile appearance on Three 6 Mafia’s “Sippin’ on Some Syrup,” and when that song became a huge hit, the stage was set for one of his own. He gained his first solo success with the 2001 hit single “Chickenhead.” Produced by Juicy J and DJ Paul and featuring La’ Chat, the track became a Dirty South anthem and propelled Pat’s third album, Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin, into the Top Five.

As Pat struggled with legal troubles, Loud pushed back the release date for Pat’s fourth album, Layin’ da Smack Down, until it finally arrived in the summer of 2002. Mixtape appearances and work with Three 6 Mafia bridged the four-year gap before Crook by da Book: The Fed Story arrived in 2006, followed by Walkin’ Bank Roll in 2007 via Koch. His 2009 effort Real Recognize Real was Pat’s first for the Asylum label, and featured the hit single “Keep It Hood” with guest OJ da Juiceman.

When he released Loud Pack in 2011, he was simultaneously serving as one of the executive producers on Hypnotize Minds compilations, including 2010’s Cutthroat: Tha Takeova and 2011’s SNO: Year Round under his newly formed DBI imprint.

Aside from recording albums, Pat has contributed to nearly 50 mixtapes in the past few years, and has been investing in real estate on the side.

“Music has been really good, but the real estate has been really good too though,” Pat beams. “Houses have been really cheap to buy. So they kind of go together – I’ve been getting good shows, and I’ve been getting good money to buy real estate. I’ve been really blessed; I’m super good.”

In the span of his career, Pat has worked with the likes of UGK, Ludacris, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Beanie Sigel, Noreaga, French Montana, Big Boi, Gucci Mane, and more. He worked with Wiz Khalifa on “Still Got It”, which was a nationwide Twitter trending topic the night the song was released.

Capitalizing on moments like these and the success of his Belly On Full mixtape with underboss Nasty Mane, Pat aims to further his new brand, and continue his reign as one of the rap game’s favorite felons. Belly On Full Part 2 is another notch on an already incredible resume. Naysayer’s are left with little ammo, since all signs point to one resounding conclusion: Everything’s still working.
