Chubbie Baby Vol 1 Reviews

Born and raised in Hip Hop’s birthplace of Bronx, New York, Chubbie looked up to harder street acts like Wu-Tang and Cam’ron at the start of their careers. He was further inspired when he heard the Notorious B.I.G.’s classic debut Ready To Die, and at only 14-years-old he knew his dream was to become a rap star. “When I heard Big it blew my mind,” explains Chubbie. “I was fascinated by how he used to rap. He was heavy-set and he was fly, that’s how I wanted to be when I got old enough to be a rapper.” Trouble landed Chubbie with a two-and-a-half year jail stint, after which he relocated to Ohio in 1999. He began to focus on building a buzz around his budding musical talents, never losing contact with long term friends Cam’ron and Jim Jones. As the Harlem Diplomats became one of the hottest names in New York rap, Chubbie simultaneously made a name for himself in the Midwest.

Chubbie has become a well known figure in the Columbus area by diversifying his business talents and developing his relationships within the community. He owns the Redzone Nightclub, one of the city’s biggest clubs, which holds 2,000 people and fills to capacity every Saturday. He brings countless stars to perform at Redzone, including Lil’ Wayne, Young Jeezy, T.I., and Dipset amongst others. He also has a radio show called Diplomat Saturdays on Columbus’ Power 107.5. His ambitious nature has allowed him to start his own movement, without having to ride the coattails of his crew to attain success. “I don’t really want people to feel that I’m using Cam, Jimmy or Juelz to get me in the game – I want to come in on my own angle,” says Chubbie. “I represent Dipset where I’m at and I don’t have to be with them – I’m a powerful name by myself.”

Chubbie explains that he enjoys bringing out-of-town creativity to the table in his affiliation with Dipset. “I’ve been Dipset from day one – that’s the only thing I ever knew. Me and Cam are like brothers, we’re best friends. With me it’s not rap, it’s family.  I’m the Dip hustler out the crew – when you wanna hear that real grimy, get money out of town hustling music, you gonna have to come listen to Chubbie Baby. Dipset is already bringing powerful music to the table – for me it’s a plus and it’s pressure at the same time. You got a lot of hot people over there. I don’t want to be behind the scenes – I want to be in the limelight making good music. ”

Chubbie’s variety of regional influences as a rapper, combined with his production skill behind the boards makes for his own fresh sound. “I got my own style, and I do my own production. I’m bringing my life to the music – the Midwest flow mixed with the New York flow. Like how Tupac was from New York, but he went to L.A. and flipped his flow… it worked for him out there, and I feel it could work for me out here.”

Having just released his first mixtape Chubbie Baby Vol.1 hosted by Camron, Chubbie is set for his rise in the industry. His do-it-yourself approach to marketing and promotion carries over into his dedicated work ethic and creative streak in the studio. “I got my own production company called Head Bangaz Entertainment,” he says. “I don’t really like using people’s beats for freestyles, because I feel like if you’re a producer a lot of beats just sit on the shelf. It’s a long process with people waiting to buy beats, so why have them sit on the shelf if they’re hot? If you have genuine talent, you’ll be able to make more hot music as you grow. My mixtapes are like mini-albums, I bring stories and great songs to the table.”

Chubbie is signed to Diplomat Records, and will be seeking major distribution for his projects in the future. His current production roster includes a track for Hell Rell and JR Writer on  Funkmaster Flex’s Car Show Tour album, and songs for upcoming projects from Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Lil’ Wayne, Juelz Santana, and Young Jeezy. Chubbie also has an acting role in Cam’s upcoming movie Killa Season.

The dual role of being a rapper and producer is something Chubbie takes very seriously. He aspires to match the success of more commercial artists on a street level. “All it’s about really is making hits,” he asserts. “I got my New York love already. I just want to throw Ohio on my back, combine it with my New York swag, and take it to the top.”
