For many Jersey girls, the stigma of being a Garden State native can be overwhelming. The good news is that you can’t believe everything you see on television, and there are modern-day women in New Jersey who are breaking the current stereotype of big hair and leopard print accessories.

Enter Rosalind, a young songwriter and entertainer who is carrying on the musical tradition of Jersey-born multi-talents like Lauryn Hill, Akon, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston.

On October 18, 2011, Rosalind will release her second original project entitled CocoaButter N Vitamin E: Part 1, with the second volume slated for release in Spring 2012. Fully produced by New York cross-genre remix duo SoundwaVVe, CocoaButter N Vitamin E will bring music fans an edgy display of Rosalind’s provocative, theatrical songs, kicked off by the first single “Hate Myself.”

A native of Essex County, New Jersey, Rosalind realized her talents when she wrote her first song at just 9-years-old. Her father was a club promoter who also sold and used drugs, and her mother was a Ford model-turned-mom who raised her children with as much structure and faith as she could.

Throughout her childhood, Rosalind honed her vocals in church, recorded and performed at various venues in the Northeast region. At 16, Rosalind performed at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, and went on to get a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Rosalind acquired a great amount of knowledge from Berklee, and later moved back to New Jersey to begin creating her own musical empire. In 2008, she worked with director and graphics specialist Roc Davis on her first music videos “Myspace” and “Rydah,” which were featured on Rosalind’s first digital album Ready. In 2010, Rosalind teamed with Design Digital Films for her “Hustler” video, which featured rapper French Montana.

As 2011 began, Rosalind brought freshly written songs to the creative men of SoundwaVVe to begin preparation for her second project CocoaButter N Vitamin E. She feels confident that her passion to create has grown immensely in the past three years, and draws from a variety of influences in her songwriting, including Mariah Carey, Erykah Badu, Death Cab For Cutie, Ne-Yo, Frank Ocean, Alanis Morissette, Missy Elliot, Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

“My music brings vulnerability to music lovers,” explains Rosalind. “I feel that a lot of artists are extremely scared to be vulnerable, like they are unbreakable. I try to give the listener a cinematic experience through my writing. Both volumes of CocoaButter N Vitamin E combined play like a mini-movie, describing a relationship from the beginning to its end.”

Rosalind enjoys repping New Jersey in a positive way, and feels that there is always room for more talent to grow in the area.

“I’m from the same area that Queen Latifah, Whitney Houston and Faith Evans are from – Essex County,” says Rosalind. “My father played basketball with Whitney Houston’s brothers. This area is very small and everyone knows everyone. Despite all of the amazing talent here, we seem to be overlooked, and I’d like to be a part of bringing people worldwide more of what we’ve got out here.”

As she moves forward in her career, Rosalind knows there is potential for growth in everything she does. Despite a tough upbringing, she’s managed to maintain a positive outlook on life and music. Her once drug-addicted father is now a minister, inspiring others to get their lives together. Now Rosalind hopes that others will draw inspiration from her movement in music.

“Through all of my experiences, I have become a well-rounded writer,” she asserts. “No matter how different each song may be from the other, they all come from my heart. I’ve invested in and managed my career thus far, and I’ve had computer hackers take away everything I worked for. Through it all, I am strong, and I’ve been humbled. I thank God, because I’ve finally found myself, and I’m still hungry and eager to learn.”
