Static Major Nominated for Three Grammys
Multi-talented producer, songwriter and artist Static Major has been nominated posthumous for three 2008 Grammy Awards through his work on Lil Wayne’s The Carter III. The nominations are for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album for The Carter III, and Best Rap Song for “Lollipop,” an award that is given to specifically to the songwriters for the track.
Static Major was an original member of the group Playa and an artist on Blackground Records. Over the years he wrote songs and produced for a variety of acts including Ginuwine, Aaliyah, Brandy, Nas, David Banner, 50 Cent, TQ and more. Static collaborated with Lil Wayne on the song and video for “Lollipop” alongside producers Deezle and Jim Jonsin prior to his untimely death on February 25, 2008.
“Lollipop” made history in late March as it became the most-added song at Urban Radio in a single week, and spent five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. The song also hit #1 on the Rhythmic Top 40, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Tracks Charts, and #2 on the Pop 100 Chart. Additionally, “Lollipop” has sustained success with fans throughout the year, and charted in Canada and overseas in the UK, Sweden, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and other countries.
The Carter III sold over a million copies in its first week of release in June 2008. The album hit #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, and was certified Double Platinum in the first month of release alone.
Static Major’s manager, Dorian Washington of Gracie Productions, expressed heartfelt joy upon hearing of the nominations: “We are very proud of Static Major’s accomplishments this year and throughout the course of his life. His has truly left behind a legacy for modern music.”
