When you think of the Virginia shore, images of beaches, spring vacation and awesome parties come to mind. You may also think of award-winning music greats like Missy Elliott, Pharrell Williams or Timbaland. Whatever the case, Virginia has been on the mainstream American map for quite some time.

Enter Grandson, a Newport News native who has been thriving in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic underground for years now, surviving on his talent, business sense and the support of loyal fans. After releasing several successful indie projects, Grandson is prepping his newest mixtape Loot Skywalker, which will debut on January 25, 2011.

It’s no secret that Virginia also raised a number of celebrities who have made it through the worst of the worst, only to succeed far beyond what was expected of them. Grandson hails from the very same neighborhood, often referred to as “Bad Newz”, that gave us Allen Iverson and Michael Vick. The latter was actually a childhood friend of Grandson, and the troubled baller has more than proven that he can turn lemons into lemonade – something that Grandson feels is his personal forte when it comes to his music.

“I have survived one of the most dangerous and poverty stricken cities in America, with a real life story to tell,” Grandson says of his hometown. “Bad Newz is a city that has been shaped by many triumphs and pitfalls from its famous residents. I think the poverty and drug culture has always pushed some to want more, and they chose other avenues to focus their talents. It might be something in the water, because so many celebrities do come from the Tidewater, VA region.“

Despite any challenges, Grandson has love for his home, and recognizes the adversity gives his music so much relatable energy. “Newport News has helped me grow. I know fans will be able to feel the emotion and truth from my lyrics, because I am speaking exactly what they see in these times. I am definitely giving the real street perspective, not just stereotypes and trap music.”

As Grandson gears up for the release of Loot Skywalker, he will release the single “Lean to the Side” along with some freestyles and some hi-def music videos. He explains that the track “Running Out of Time,” produced by The Kickdrums, is one of his personal favorite songs on the project, and that he is confident Hip Hop fans will enjoy the energy of the original tracks.

DJ L.E.S. (LL Cool J, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez) has been a mentor in the business, and he produced the single ‘I Got It 4 Sale.’ Multi-platinum producer Kyze Beats (Cam’ron, N.O.R.E., Angie Stone)  did ‘That’s What It Is’, and underground star Pop-a-Lot is also featured. Aside from the dope beats, I want fans to feel my serious and dramatic approach to songwriting, and also understand my raw commentary.”

Grandson also believes in a well-rounded approach to songwriting so that he can reach new fans around the world.

“My sound has a balance,” he asserts. “ I sometimes I have a hard-edged, dangerous style, but  I also like softer and lighter melodies at times. I make gangster street tunes, but with relevant social commentary.  I hope with gaining new fans I can begin to experience different cultures, and express my understanding to these different people. I really want people to listen, understand and love the music.”
